Gone are those days when Jailbreaking was illegal and had penalties. The federal government has officially sanctioned the popular activity which allows iPhone(and Android) owners to legally break electronic locks on their devices and download “unapproved” software apps without fear of imprisonment or penalty
However the Apple say that its unlawful and illegal to jailbreak iphone and they have not taken any actions against those who have jailbreaked iPhone and installed external apps

WASHINGTON — Owners of the iPhone will be able to legally unlock their devices so they can run software applications that haven’t been approved by Apple Inc., according to new government rules announced Monday.

The iphone is an awesome device, but I recently got to try the HTC Incredible… and that device IS incredible! My cousin just bought it and I really can’t believe how cool it is. And with so many software programs available with open source, the possibilities are unlimited.
